What to do in urine retention in a pt of birth asphyxia with HIE. Alt hot and cold compresses are not effective. As far as I know, manual compression is harmful. The baby passes urine only when compressed.

Please check to rule out an outlet obstruction. Secondly, there may be cord involvement in case of severe HIE and you may have a neurogenic bladder. An initial USG with post void residue will give a clue. Thereafter, consider CIC, indwelling catheter for a week and reassess.

intermittent decompression of the bladder or suprapubic bladder expression method (Crede's maneuver) is helpful . Just wait and watch for normal spontaneous voiding
which will be established within 48 hrs.(most likely). But USG abdomen is necessary to exclude obstructive cause and at the same time fluid electrolyte balance is required because of association of SIADH
