What is anal itching?
Itching over the skin near the anus and rectum is known as anal itching.
What is the cause of anal itching?
Anal itching can occur due to moisture, pressure, and abrasion caused by clothes and sitting. Sometimes irritating chemicals in the food we eat like hot sauces, peppers, and spices can also lead to itching. Pinworms can lead to itching predominantly at night. Post diarrhea due to chemical irritation of skin or fungal infection of the skin can also lead to itching.
What are the symptoms of anal itching?
Itching in the anal region is the commonest symptom. Irritation of skin may then lead to redness of the skin.
How anal itching is treated?
Important thing is to clean and dry the anus thoroughly with antiseptic soap. Cleaning may require gentle showering without direct rubbing or irritation of the skin. Avoid leaving soap in the anal area. After a bowel movement, moist pads should be used for cleaning. Medicines to control pinworms and fungal infections may be given is that is the cause. In severe cases, antihistamines or steroid creams may be prescribed.
