Many forms of treatment have been tried for the severe forms of OI. Hormones such as calcitonin, estrogens, cortisone, growth hormone and fluorides have been tried but with no effective outcome. Recent studies have demonstrated the use of bisphosphonates as an effective therapy for affected children. Treatment with bisphosphonates leads to improvement in mobility and decreasing symptoms in many patients. They improve quality of life, inhibit bone resorption, increases bone mineralization and thus decrease fractures and bone pains although the matrix still contains mutant Type I collagen. There is an Indian study by Dr Ira Shah {Editor - Pediatric Oncall} on oral alendronate for treatment of OI which will be published in Annals of Tropical Pediatrics in March 2007.
