Human prion diseases or transmissible spongiform encephalopathies {TSE} are rare transmissible diseases affecting the central nervous system. Genetic TSE are seen with Gerstmann-Straussler-Scheinker and Fatal Familial Insomnia. Hence blood donation is contraindicated as they may be transmitted through blood donation.
