This child presented with altered sensorium. There was history of regression of milestones, hepatosplenomegaly, generalized lymphadenopathy and frequent pneumonias.



What is the diagnosis and the cause of her neurological symptoms?

Discussion :
HIV encephalopathy: It is a progressive primary encephalopathy caused by human immunodeficiency virus type I infection; it involves principally the subcortical white matter and deep gray nuclei and is manifested by a variety of cognitive, motor, and behavioral abnormalities. It is also called AIDS dementia complex. CT or MRI may reveal cortical and subcortical atrophy with secondary ventricular enlargement.
