Treatment of onychomycosis is challenging because the infection is embedded within the nail and is difficult to reach. Most treatments are either systemic antifungal medications such as Terbinafine and Itraconazole or griseofulvin.

Mild infections affecting less than 80 percent of one or two nails may respond to topical antifungal medications but cure usually requires an oral antifungal medication for several months. Combined topical and oral treatment is probably the most effective regime.
