Typhoid leads to relative neutropenia and not neutrophilia. After typhoid the neutrophilia may be a rebound phenomenon.

In typhoid there is a relative decrease in the WBC count that returns to normal when the disease subsides. This is because the typhoid bactria possess a capsular polysacharide that retards ingestion of the bacteria by the macrophages. Thus further action
involving neutrophils does not take place as a result a neutrophil count does not increase. Once the infection starts coming under control, the neutrophilic response occurs.
