FIrst and foremost get the blood group rechecked. If it is confirmed to be the same, it may be due to the possiblitiy of immature blood group antigen formation on the patient's RBCS which can be seen in the neonatal period as well as upto 4 months of age. Thus on testing with agglutination method, absence of A and B antigen may lead to a false blood group test. Hence it is advised that when transfusing a child upto 4 months of age, one must crossmatch with the mothers blood group. Baby's blood group antigens are well formed by 4 months of age after which the cross match should be done with the baby's blood group.
