Splenectomy



Question :
This is a known thalassemic . His blood transfusion requirement has gone to getting packed cells once a week. His pretransfuion Hemoglobin continues to remain around 6 gm percent. He also has thrombocytopenia and low WBC count?



How should he be treated?

Discussion :
This child has a massive splenomegaly with pancytopenia and increased blood transfusion requirement. Thus he has hypersplenism and needs to undergo Splenectomy.
