The cause of grinding of teeth is still unknown but it is postulated to be due to stress and emotional upsets. Prolonged grinding of teeth can lead to damage to the teeth and the gums. The est way to prevent this is to wear a night guard. This is an acrylic piece of plastic used to cover and prevent the teeth from coming together while sleeping at night. Children usually overcome this by 4-5 years of age.

the teeth grinding may be due to insecurity, or fear within the child.
