I examined a neonate {20 days old, weight-3.6kg} coming from poor faimily who had plenty of maggots actively oozing from the umblicus and prepuce of uncircumcised penis. The periumblical area and glans of penis was inflamed. The baby was otherwise active, feeding well and passing urine normally. The area was cleaned and treated with few drops of formalin solution. Within hour maggots became inactive. After cleaning again, antibiotic ointment Fusidic acid was applied. Systamatic antibiotic was also started. I have earlier seen maggots in nose, ear and wounds but maggots in the umblicus and under prepuce was seen first time by me. How to manage such a case?

Maggots can be removed by application of permethrin. However in case of newborn it is best avoided and manual removal is the best bet.
