a 3 months old boy has obstructive hydrocephalus most probably post infectious. his present csf shows 40 cells all lymphocytes, 340mg, dl protien and 13.5 mg, dl sugar. Is it appropriate to put a vp shunt in this boy.

Expert Answer :
The protein content is high and may lead to post surgery block in the shunt. However if the hydrocephalus is large and causing pressure symptoms, one may need to relieve the pressures by either a chamber, ventricular tap or even a shunt, ALso infection is still present in CSF, so appropriate treatment for the same would be required.
