Mechanism :
Sodium Picosulfate increases peristalsis (stimulant laxative); magnesium citrate, formed by magnesium oxide and citric acid, increases peristalsis (osmotic laxative).
Indication :
Contraindications :
Hypersensitivity to drug/class/component, CrCl <30, uncorrected Electrolyte abnormalities, Intestinal perforation, GI obstruction, Toxic colitis, Toxic megacolon or ileus, Gastric retention.
Caution if severe ulcerative colitis, arrhythmia risk, renal impairment, concurrent nephrotoxic agent use, seizure history or risk, aspiration risk, impaired gag reflex, prior or concurrent antibiotic use.
Dosing :
Give orally.
>10 years:
5-10 mg per day.
4-10 years:
2.5-5 mg per day.
<4 years:
0.25 mg/kg/day.
Adverse Effect :
Serious Reactions: Electrolyte imbalance, renal failure, seizures, arrhythmia, ischemic colitis, colonic mucosal aphthous ulcer, nausea, headache, vomiting, abdominal cramps/distension, hyponatremia, hypokalemia, hypermagnesemia, hypocalcemia, hypochloremia, hypersensitivity reaction.
Interaction :
Avoid/Use Alternative:
Calcitriol, Doxercalciferol, Ursodiol.
Hepatic Dose :
Avoid in hepatic coma.
