it is mediated by exfoliative toxins A and B produced by hematogenous spread of staph.usually antitoxins are produced against these.in the absence of these antitoxin antibodies and decreased renal clearance of exfoliative toxins in infants makes them more prone

Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome {SSSS} almost always occurs in infants, and immunosuppressed adults or adults with renal failure. Infants have an immature immune system.

Pathology: Group II coagulase-positive staphylococci, usually phage type 71 and often resistant to penicillin, elaborate exfoliatin {also called epidermolysin}, an epidermolytic toxin that splits off the upper part of the epidermis just beneath the granular cell layer.
