Some patients of pinworm with symptoms of periumbilical pain and perianal itching persisting symptoms even after Albendazole and mebendazole. Which other anthelminthic is to be used?
5
Expert Answer :
the use of benzimidazoles like Mebendazole and Albendazole acheive cure rates upto 90-95 percent. the most important thing to remember about pinworms is that the eggs hatch after 1-2 weeks and can lead to re-infection and perpetuation of the symptoms. Hence a repeat dose usually is to be given after 10-14 days of the first dose.
Additionally, another drug that can be used is Pyrantel Pamoate which has an efficacy of approximately 90 percent. even here a repeat dose is required.
Ivermectin can also be used as mentioned, considered effective but we have no experience with the same.
