Expert Answer :
Pneumococcal organisms can cause Invasive as well as noninvasive disorders in children. Invasive diseases are more common in children less tha 2 years which includes Bacterial meningitis and Bacteremia. Almost 40 percent of Pneumonias in children less than 5 years is due to this organism. There is lots of Morbidity, Moertality and sequelae.

Though serotypes responsible for the diseases in India covered by available Conjugate Pneumococcal vaccine{including cross protection} is about 55 percent, it is almost 100 percent protective against the covered strains. Especially this year when Swine Flue pandemic is already at our doorstep, value of pneumococcal vaccine is much more.

I would recommend to all infants of the affordind parents to receive conjugate pneumococcal vaccine.
