Ascitis is due to lot of causes of which hypoproteinemia is one of the cause. It occurs due to lymphatic obstruction, poor venous drainage as in portal hypertension and decreased intravascular volume leading to renin angiotensin activation and salt and water retention. In Kwashiorkor there is predominant hypoproteinemia that leads to edema of dependent areas due to decreased oncotic pressures.
