Prematures and neonates are particularly at risk with TPN. Cholestasis occurs earlier and has a greater chance of leading to chronic liver disease in surgical patients. Hepatobiliary abnormalities are more likely to develop after a prolonged period of TPN and are less frequent in patients who are also receiving oral feedings. However, yeung et al have stated that there were no significant clinical and statistical differences in biochemical responses in newborn infants Less than 33 weeks gestation who received standardized versus individualized TPN regimes during the first week of life. {J Paediatr Child Health 2003}
