Differential diagnosis of ectodermal dyplasia include:

Alopecia Areata
Aplasia Cutis Congenita
Focal Dermal Hypoplasia Syndrome
Incontinentia Pigmenti
Naegeli-Franceschetti-Jadassohn Syndrome
Pachyonychia Congenita

Laboratory studies do not help in diagnosis but are done to rule out various systems that may involved. Skin histopathology documents a reduction in the number of sweat glands, hair follicles, and sebaceous glands Genetic testing for hidrotic ED, X-linked recessive and autosomal dominant hypohidrotic ED, EEC syndrome, and AEC syndrome is available.

For anhidrosis, treatment consists of maintaining hydration and temperature. For patients with dental abnormatilies, Dentures may be indicated.
