Expert Answer :
AS per Merck Manual, Protein-energy undernutrition {PEU}, previously called protein-energy malnutrition, is an energy deficit due to chronic deficiency of all macronutrients. It commonly includes deficiencies of many micronutrients. PEU can be sudden and total {starvation} or gradual. Mild Undernutrition is when weight is between 85-90 percent of expected, moderate undernutrition is between 75-85 percent and severe undernutrition is when weight is less than 75 percent of expected. It also takes into consideration body mass index, serum albumin, serum transferrin and total lymphocyte count.
