A three years old child suffering from dyserythropoietic anaemia is being administered regular top up tranfusions.Does the child need to be administered chelating agents ?

YES, BUT THE DECISION TO GIVE CHELATION DEPENDS UPON SERUM FERRITIN LEVEL. IT SHOULD BE MORE THAN 1000 MICRO GRAM-LITRE, WHICH IS USUALLY REACHED AT 3 YR OF REGULAR TOP UP TRANSFUSIONS.
