What are the treatment guidelines for acute pharyngitis, nelson has mentioned only penicillin, amoxicillin, and erythromycin. What about the oral and injectable cephalosporins and macrolides?

Only in the case of streptococcal pharyngitis are antibiotics required. The drug of choice is penicillin. For penicillin allergy, Erythromycin can be used. There is no need for injectable cephalosporins.

Most cases are viral, therefore no antibiotic is indicated. However, Cephalosporines and Macrolids (except for Erythromycin) are not suitable for Acute Strep Pharyngitis.

history & examination if possible. penicillin, co amoxiclav. clarithromycin if penicillin sensitivity.

mostly acute pharyngitis are due to viral or allergies...and then bacterial .....so first access them properly and then prefer basic antibiotics if required.... CBC, CRP, throat swab will help to learn which infection is it ! Then deside accordingly .
