Both quinine and artemisin compounds have the same side effects and thus may have an additive effect on the adverse effects. Also there is no added advantage by giving both the drugs together for treatment of malaria as both are short acting drugs and now the recommendation is to give one short acting drug with one long acting drug to prevent relapse of malaria. The combinations thus recommended are artesunate Plus mefloquine or pyrimethamine sulfamethoxazle and artemether with lumfantrine. The combination with quinine and clindamycin or doxycycline.
