I was wondering why a 13 year old girl with bilateral pneumonia, {diagnosed on xray} would be treated with IV antibiotics initially in hospital until fever settled. Why not antibiotics PO? There was no problem with vomiting or with GIT.

IV ANTIBIOTICS ARE NECCESARY TO ACHUEVE BLOOD LEVELS WHICH IS DESIRED IN SPECIFIC PNEUMONIA.

as the condition is very lethal we cannot take chances as oral absorption is very un predictable.

Oral antibiotics may be prescribed for a walking pneumonia {afebrile pneumonia}. If the child is toxic, has high fever and high counts, IV antibiotics may be required.
