Two types of tests have been used to evaluate for Protein Losing Enteropathy. The first involves the intravenous administration of a radiolabeled substrate followed by the determination of radioactivity in the feces. The second type of test directly measures endogenous proteins in the feces. Protein losing enteropathy may occur without diarrhea and should be suspected in a child with hypoalbuminemia without a renal or liver pathology.
