Mupirocin
Mechanism :
Mupirocin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by reversibly and specifically binding to bacterial isoleucyl transfer-RNA synthetase.
Indication :
- Impetigo
- Pyoderma
- Staphylococcal nasal carrier state elimination (including MRSA)
Contraindications :
This drug is contraindicated in individuals with a history of sensitivity reactions to any of its components. Avoid application to the eyes. Ointment contains polyethylene glycol (PEG) which may be absorbed from open wounds and damaged skin. Caution is needed in moderate or severe renal impairment, in neonates and burns patients.
Dosing :
Impetigo, Pyoderma:
Available as 2% cream, ointment.
Apply to affected area 3 times daily for up to 10 days.
Elimination of MRSA colonisation:
Available as 2% nasal ointment.
Apply one half of a single use tube to the inner surface of each nostril 2 times a day for 5 days.

Burning and stinging pain, itching, rash, nausea, headache, erythema, dry skin, tenderness, swelling, contact dermatitis, and increased exudate.
Hepatic Dose :
No dose adjustments are recommended.
