* Late 80s at Wadia Hospital - first started seeing patients with AIDS,
What WE FOUND:
+ Mother to child transmission
Malnutrition, chronic diarrhea, infections
+ Most HIV positive children survive for 75-90 months.
2:28 - Disease Progression
* In infants:
* PCP Pneumonia
+ In children between 3-4 years: Opportunistic infections
+ Hepatosplenomegaly,
+ Lymphadenopathy
+ Chronic Diarrhea
+ Oral Thrush
2:43 - After 5 Years:
+ HIV Cardiomyopathy,
+ HIV Encephalopathy
+ Renal and bone marrow involvement
4.57 - How does HIV occur in children?
Vertical Transmission of HIV in Children
* Intrauterine: 5%
* Intrapartum : 15-20%
* Breast Feeding : 10-15%
Thus mother to child transmission of HIV: 35-40% without intervention.
With intervention: less than 2%
