Why there is macrocephaly at birth in a case of glutaric acidemia type 1?

Macrocephaly in such children is taken as a characteristic sign and is associated with abnormal fluid collections in the brain on brain imaging {especially anterior to the frontal and temporal lobes}. This is most probably due to the accumulation of toxic substances which result in brain injury {especially the basal ganglia}
