Current thinking suggests that the syndrome might better be termed behavioral breathlessness or psychogenic dyspnea with hyperventilation. Techniques of rebreathing into a paper bag are no longer recommended because significant hypoxia and death have been reported.

Patients should be referred to a psychologist.
