The criteria for neonatal septicaemia are both Clinical and pathological. Clinical Septicaemia is usually should be supported by laboratory data, as many diseases `mimick` septicaemia otherwise - the notable examples being metabolic disorders.

Clinically - the baby may be hypo {more commonly} or hyperthermic, with poor perfusion, possibly hypotension {may be a late sign}, mottling, lethargy, sometimes hyperglycaemia and tachycardia plus tachypnea. The laboratory signs, include increased toxic granulation of white cells {band forms}, raised ESR or CRP, blood or urine culture being positive.
