management of naphthelene balls poisoning _?
0
Expert Answer :
Naphthalene poisoning can cause various effects. If it affects the skin, it mainly causes irritation and a burning sensation. If it is swallowed it causes abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. It may also cause fever, convulsions, drowsiness, headache.
One of the most important effects is hemolysis of red blood cells, especially in those with G6PD deficiency. This acute hemolysis can cause tachycardia, hypotension, yellowish discolouration of skin, breathlessness, low urine output {due to acute tubular necrosis}, hematuria, renal failure.
Management
Airway, breathing, circulation hasd to be stabilized.
Removal of the poison from the body by inducing vomiting. This can be done using salt water,
Ipecac
etc.
Activated Charcoal
is used to decrease absorption.
Investigations need to be sent like ABG, CBC, TC, DC, LFT, RFT, Peripheral smear, urine routine microscopy etc. Xray chest needs to be done.
Symptomatic treatment for abdominal symptoms. If the patient has convulsions then give diaqzepam.
If the patient develops any signs of hemolysis:
Supportive care, including oxygen and mechanical ventilation, should be given as and when needed:
If there is evidence of haemolysis, intravenous fluids should be given to reduce the possibility of renal failure.
Bicarbonate may be given to make the urine alkaline {pH More than 7.5}.
There is no specific antidote here. Treat the symptoms.
