Capsicum Annum

Capsicum or chillies {red pepper` mirch} have a pungent odour and taste, and are used as a condiment. They are not fatal. The active principles are capsaicin {alkaloid} and capsicin.

Clinical Picture :
In large doses, it acts as an irritant poison and causes difficulty in swallowing, pain in the stomach and inflammation of the oesophagus and stomach. Applied to the skin and the mucosa it causes irritation. Powder thrown in the eyes causes severe irritation leading to lacrimation, burning pain and redness.
Treatment :
1. Bathe affected skin in vinegar or ice-cold water.
2. If ingested, sucking of ice cubes or ice-cold water.
