Proparacaine

Mechanism :

It is a topical anaesthetic drug belonging to the amino ester group.

Reversibly inhibits nerve conduction near the application site.It is possible that sodium ion permeability through the lipid layer of the nerve cell membrane is limited

Prevents the initiation and transmission of nerve impulses by stabilizing the neuronal membrane, so that the neuron is less permeable to ions.


Indication :

  • For induction of anaesthesia in ophthalmic procedures.

Contraindications :

hypersensitivity to ester type anesthetics


Dosing :

Ophthalmic solution: 0.5%.
Suture & Foreign Bodies Remove 1-2 gtt from the eye(s) just before the procedure.
Ophthalmic Deep Anesthesia: 1 gtt 5-10 min for a total of 5-7 doses.

Adverse Effect :

• Corneal damage

• Contact dermatitis

• CNS depression

• Conjunctival congestion

• Corneal opacification pain , burning and stinging in the eye

• Keratitis and tearing

• Increased diaphoresis


Lactation :

use caution, not established if the drug is distributed in milk.
