Magnesium Oxide

Mechanism :

Magnesium oxide is a mineral which acts as a cofactor in several enzymatic reactions and is essential for many metabolic functions.


Indication :

  • Dietary supplement
  • Antacid

Contraindications :

• Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to drug components

• Use cautiously in patients with renal impairment

• Use cautiously in patients with any neuromuscular disorder

• Use cautiously in patients with myasthenia gravis

• Use cautiously in patients with botulism

• Use cautiously in patients with diverticulitis

• Use cautiously in patients with ulcerative colitis

• Use cautiously in patients with colostomy or ileostomy


Dosing :

Available as: (dosage forms expressed as elemental Mg)
Oral tablet of 241.3 mg, 250 mg, 253 mg, 500 mg
Oral capsule of 250 mg, 400 mg, 500 mg
Dosage: (for dietary supplement)
1-3 years: 80 mg/day orally
4-8 years: 130 mg/day orally
9-13 years: 240 mg/day orally
14-18 years (males): 410 mg/day orally
14-18 years (females): 360 mg/day orally
14-18 years (pregnant females): 400 mg/day orally

Adverse Effect :

Diarrhea, GI irritation.

Lactation :

Drug administration is safe in the course of breastfeeding. It is secreted in breastmilk.


Hepatic Dose :

No dose adjustment required.


Pregnanacy :

Pregnancy category A
