Pilocarpine
Mechanism :
It is a topical miotic agent with prominent muscarinic actions used in the treatment of open angle glaucoma by causing a fall in intraocular tension. It can also cause marked sweating, salivation and an increase in other secretions of the body and hence is used in the diagnosis of Riley Day and other hereditary neuropathies.
Indication :
- Accommodative esotropia
- Glaucoma.
Contraindications :
Pilocarpine (HCl, Nitrate) is contraindicated in conditions like Inflammation.
Dosing :
Available as 1%, 2%, 4% and 6% ophthalmic solution.
1 to 18 years:
Instill 1 to 2 drops in the affected eye 3 to 4 times daily.
Adverse Effect :
Painful spasm of accommodation, initial stinging sensation.
Interaction :
Homatropine: Pilocarpine (HCl, Nitrate) is known to interact with other drugs like Homatropine (HBr).
Hepatic Dose :
For topical ophthalmic preparation: No dose adjustment recommended.
