Chlorzoxazone
Mechanism :
It is a muscle-relaxant. It acts by inhibiting muscle spasms by acting at the level of the spinal cord and subcortical areas of the brain. It is used as a skeletal muscle relaxant.
Indication :
- Musculoskeletal pain and muscle spasms
Contraindications :
Hypersensitivity, Impaired liver function.
Dosing :
2.5-7.5 mg/kg/dose PO 3-4 times per day.
Max: 750 mg/dose.
Adverse Effect :
Light headedness, dizziness, drowsiness, excitement, paradoxical somnolence, malaise, rash angioneurotic edema, gastrointestinal hemorrhage (rare), hepatotoxicity (rare), anaphylaxis (rare).
Interaction :
Doxylamine: Combo may increase risk of CNS depression, psychomotor impairment (additive effects).
Sodium oxybate: May increase risk of CNS depression, psychomotor impairment, adverse effects (additive effects).
Hepatic Dose :
Use is contraindicated in children with hepatic impairment. Chlorzoxazone has been associated with idiosyncratic and fatal hepatotoxicity.
