Lindane

Mechanism :

Lindane is a parasiticidal agent used in the treatment of head lice and scabies. It has also been used to control disease-causing vectors such as mosquitoes.


Indication :

  • Non-crusted scabies
  • Head lice or crab lice
  • Pediculosis capitis
  • Pediculosis pubis

Contraindications :

Hypersensitivity to drug/class/component.

Seizure disorder, Norwegian (crusted) scabies, Premature neonates, Lindane use history.

Caution in infants or children, head injury, HIV infection or CNS tumor.


Dosing :

Scabies, Pediculosis capitis, Pediculosis pubis:
Apply 1% lotion once (Max: 15 mL in children between 1 month-6 years and 30 ml in children above 6 years of age). Do not apply on open wounds.
Head lice or Crab lice:
Apply 1-2 ounces of shampoo on dry hair for four minutes followed by lathering, rinsing and removal of nits with a fine comb.

Adverse Effect :

Seizure, slight local irritation (including eczematous eruptions, rash, conjunctivitis), cardiac arrhythmia, restlessness, nausea/vomiting, seizures, pulmonary edema, alopecia, repeated application frequently causes contact dermatitis, aplastic anemia, ataxia, pain, dizziness, urticaria, hepatitis, hematuria, paresthesia.


Interaction :

Monitor/Modify Treatment:
Magnesium citrate.

Hepatic Dose :

If systemically absorbed, metabolism of lindane may be impaired in patients with severe hepatic disease and may lead to neurotoxicity.
