Benzocaine
Synonym :
Ethyl Aminobenzoate
Mechanism :
Benzocaine reversibly stabilizes the neuronal membrane which decreases its permeability to sodium ions. Depolarization of the neuronal membrane is inhibited thereby blocking the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses.
Indication :
- For temporary pain relief of toothache, denture irritation, brace pain, minor mouth irritations, cold sores, sun and fever blisters, minor burns and canker sores.
- Teething: For temporary relief from the pain and irritation associated with teething.
- Hemorrhoids
Contraindications :
Known sensitivity to any of the ingredients.
Dosing :
Teething, Mouth sores, Dental pains:
To be applied topically to the affected area (7.5-10% topical). Reapply as necessary up to 4 times daily.
Hemorrhoids:
>12 years:
Apply 5-20% externally to affected area q4hr.
Sore throat (Mouth pain):
(Safety and efficacy not established in children <5 years of age).
≥5 years:
Oral lozenge: 1 lozenge dissolved in mouth; repeat every 2 hours (generally use <2 days) as and when required.
Oral spray:
Apply 1 spray to affected area; spit after 1 min; may repeat up to 4 times.
Otic use:
4-5 drops into the ear canal, may repeat every 1-2 hours as and when needed.
Adverse Effect :
Known sensitivity to any of the ingredients.
Contact dermatitis, burning, stinging, pruritus, tenderness, erythema, rash, urticaria and edema. Methemoglobinemia causing respiratory distress and cyanosis.
Hepatic Dose :
No dosage adjustments are recommended.
