What are Liver Abscesses?
Liver abscesses are infectious lesions in the liver. The two common abscesses are Pyogenic and Amoebic. Fungal abscess are rare.
What are the symptoms of Liver Abscesses
Children with liver abscess present with fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, jaundice, decreased food intake.
How do we diagnose Liver Abscesses?
Ultrasonography of abdomen is the initial investigation of choice for the assessment of liver abscess. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are useful to detect small size abscesses. Blood investigations like blood cultures, antigen tests for E Histolytica are contributory.
How do we treat Liver Abscesses?
Broad spectrum antibiotics are initial treatment of choice for liver abscess. Two week intravenous antibiotics followed by 4 weeks oral antibiotics is recommended. Percutaneous drainage procedure is indicated in large volume abscess. Surgical management is indicated when there is no response to antibiotics with percutaneous drainage or when pus is thick or when abscess ruptured into peritoneal cavity.
