Vitamin K Deficiency

Question :
This child presented with progressive patches over the skin. On investigations, he had normal platelet count and deranged Prothrombin Time and Partial thromboplastin Time which normalised after one injection.

What is the diagnosis?

Discussion :
Vitamin K Deficiency. Vitamin K is necessary for production of carboxylated Factor II, VII, IX and X in the coagulation cascade system. Vitamin K deficiency results in non-functional (qualitative) deficiency of above-mentioned factors. Vitamin K deficiency is associated with markedly prolonged partial thromboplastin time (PTT) and Prothrombin time (PT) with normal Thrombin time, Fibrinogen and platelet count.
