Question :
This child presented with seizures. He had birth asphyxia in the newborn period.



What is the diagnosis?

Discussion :
Encephalomalacia. Encephalomalcia means softening of the brain due to infarction. It can occur in the white matter leading to spasticity and motor disturbances or can occur in the grey matter due to infarcts. It may also occur in watershed areas in patients with prolonged shock. Multicystic encephalomalacia may occur in post infectious meningoencephalitis. Long term sequelae of survivors can be markedly debilitating with major neurological problems, including mental retardation, blindness and spastic quadriparesis
