Congenital intrauterine infections



Question :
A 2½ months old male child presented with fever and generalized tonic clonic convulsions. He had hepatosplenomegaly with generalized lymphadenopathy and raised intracranial tension. A CSF analysis was done which showed high proteins (147 mg%) with 4 polymorphs and 2 lymphocytes/cumm and sugar of 45 mg/dl with corresponding blood sugar of 48 mg/dl. A CT brain is shown.



How to investigate further?

Discussion :
The CT brain shows extensive calcifications with dilatation of right lateral ventricle suggestive of congenital intrauterine infection. A further investigation in the form of TORCH titres is indicated.
