0
Expert Answer :
Symptomatic hypernatremia is corrected slowly over 48 hours by IV infusiion with normal saline. One can use a standard formula that is quoted in text book. But the principle is to use Normal Saline and slow correction to avoid brain edema. In asymptomatic hypovolemic hypernatremia, one may choose to correct volume deficit and that alone may suffice. In euvolemic hypernatremia as seen in diabetes incipidus, correction of dehydration with oral extra fluids in enough. In hypervolemic hypernatremia, diuretic may be necessary to get rid of retained sodium.
