Flourides

Sodium fluoride is used in rat poisons and cockroach powders. Sodium silicflouride, flouroacetamide and flouroacetate are used as rodenticides.
Route :
Ingestion
Fatal Dose :
5mg/kg body weight
Mechanism of action :
•Flouride compounds react with acid in the stomach and form hydrofluoric acid which is corrosive.
•They also cause hypocalcemia, hypomagnesia and hypokalemia
•Acts as a general protoplasmic poison

Clinical Picture :
•Ingestion causes burning, pain in mouth and epigastrium, thirst, salivation, vomiting, diarrhea, haematemesis and hematuria
•Coma and convulsions

Treatment :
•Calcium orally and i.v.
•Stomach wash with lime water or milk
