Polystyrene Sulfonate

Synonyms :

Calcium Polystyrene Sulfonate, Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate

Mechanism :

Cation-exchange resin used for hyperkalemia.


Indication :

  • Hyperkalemia

Contraindications :

Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to polystyrene sulfonate resins.


Dosing :

1 gm/kg PO/PR every 6 hours. Max: 15 g/dose orally and 50 g/dose rectally.

Adverse Effect :

Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to polystyrene sulfonate resins.

Bowel necrosis, GI bleeding, GI perforation, GI obstruction, bezoar, constipation, colitis, hypomagnesemia, hypokalemia, hypocalcemia, anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, nausea.
