Magnesium Citrate
Mechanism :
Increases peristaltic activity of the colon and also promotes bowel evacuation due to osmotic retention of fluid.
Indication :
- Constipation
- Acid Indigestion
Contraindications :
• Contraindicated in patients on low sodium diet
• Avoid use in patients with renal failure
• Avoid use in patients with electrolyte abnormalities
• Avoid use in patients with myasthenia gravis
• Avoid use in patients with neuromuscular disorders
• Avoid use in patients with acute surgical abdomen
• Avoid use in patients with appendicitis
• Avoid use in patients with myocardial damage
• Avoid use in patients with heart block
• Avoid use in patients with intestinal obstruction/perforation
• Avoid use in patients with fecal impaction/rectal fissures
Dosing :
Available as 290 mg/5 ml liquid and 100 mg (elemental) tablet.
<2 years:
Safety and efficacy is unknown.
2-6 years:
60-90 ml orally. Do not exceed 90 ml/24 hours.
6-12 years:
90-210 ml orally in a single or divided doses with one glass of water
>12 years:
195-300 ml orally in a single or divided doses with one glass of water; may alternatively administer 2-4 tablets orally at bedtime.
Adverse Effect :
Abdominal cramping, vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, flatulence, hypermagnesemia, electrolyte imbalance.
Lactation :
Drug can be administered safely in the course of breastfeeding
Hepatic Dose :
No dose adjustments are required in hepatic impairment.
