Magnesium Chloride
Mechanism :
Magnesium chloride acts as a cofactor in several enzymatic reactions involving protein synthesis and carbohydrate metabolism; depresses CNS, blocks peripheral neuromuscular transmission, and produces anticonvulsant effects.
Indication :
Contraindications :
• Contraindicated in patients with renal impairment
• Contraindicated in comatose patients
• Contraindicated in patients with significant myocardial disease
• Use cautiously in patients with flushing, sweating and signs of magnesium toxicity on administration
• Use cautiously in patients with history of seizures
• Use cautiously in patients with electrolyte abnormalities
• Use cautiously in patients with toxic megacolon, toxic colitis, ulcerative colitis, intestinal obstruction, GI perforation, gastric retention, ileus
• Use cautiously in patients with risk of arrythmias
• Use cautiously in patients with botulism
Dosing :
Available as an injectable solution of 200 mg/ml and an extended-release tablet of 535 mg (64mg elemental).
RDA:
<6 months: 30 mg/day
6-12 months: 75 mg/day
1-3 years: 80 mg/day
3-8 years: 130 mg/day
8-13 years: 240 mg/day
13-18 years:
410 mg/day (men)
360 mg/day (women)
400 mg/day (pregnant women)
360 mg/day (lactating women)
Adverse Effect :
Sweating, stupor, flushing, hypothermia, respiratory depression, decrease in blood pressure.
Lactation :
Use cautiously in the course of breastfeeding since it is excreted through breast milk.
Hepatic Dose :
No dose adjustment needed.
Pregnanacy :
Pregnancy category C
