Influenza Virus Vaccine
Mechanism :
Influenza Virus Vaccine for intramuscular use, is a sterile suspension prepared from influenza viruses propagated in embryonated chicken eggs.
Indication :
- Prophylaxis against influenza
Contraindications :
Contraindicated in patients with known systemic hypersensitivity reactions to egg proteins, to chicken proteins, or to any component of vaccine or who has had a life-threatening reaction to previous administration of any influenza vaccine. Immunization should be delayed in a patient with an active neurologic disorder.
Dosing :
To be given to children above 6 months of age.
6-35 months:
0.25 ml given IM; 1-2 doses per season.
3-8 years:
0.5 ml given IM; 1-2 doses per season.
>9 years:
0.5 ml given IM; 1 dose per season.
Adverse Effect :
Fever, malaise and arthralgia may occur within 12 hours and last up to 2 days. Urticaria, angioedema, bronchospasm and anaphylaxis have been reported rarely. Mild local reactions at the site of injection may occur.
Interaction :
Warfarin, Theophylline, and Phenytoin: Influenza vaccination may inhibit the clearance. The data is inconclusive, but sufficient to justify caution when the vaccine is used with any of these medications.
Immunosuppressive therapies, including irradiation, antimetabolites, alkylating agents, cytotoxic drugs, and corticosteroids: May reduce the immune response to influenza vaccines.
Hepatic Dose :
No dose adjustments are recommended.
