Flunisolide
Mechanism :
Flunisolide is a topical steroid. Flunisolide has demonstrated marked anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic activity. It is a corticosteroid that is several hundred times more potent in anti-inflammatory assays than the cortisol standard.
Indication :
- Allergic rhinitis
- In maintenance treatment of asthma as
- Prophylactic therapy
- To reduce or eliminate the need for oral corticosteroids
Contraindications :
Flunisolide inhaler is contraindicated in the primary treatment of status asthmaticus, acute episodes of asthma where intensive measures are required, in hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of this preparation, in any untreated fungal, bacterial or viral infection of nose or eyes.
Dosing :
Available as 25 mcg per actuation intranasal spray.
Allergic Rhinitis:
<6 years: Safety and Efficacy not established
6 to 14 years: 2 sprays in each nostril 2 times a day or 1 spray in each nostril 3 times a day.
Maximum total daily doses should not exceed 4 sprays in each nostril.
14 years or older: Initial dose: 2 sprays in each nostril 2 times a day, may be increased to 2 sprays in each nostril 3 times a day if needed. Maximum total daily doses should not exceed 8 sprays in each nostril.
Asthma:
<6 years: Safety and efficacy not established.
6-11 years: 1 actuation (80 mcg) inhaled PO twice daily initially; may titrate upward, not to exceed 2 actuations (160 mcg) twice daily.
≥12 years: 2 actuations (160 mcg) inhaled PO twice daily; may titrate upward, not to exceed 4 actuations (320 mcg) twice daily.
Adverse Effect :

Diarrhea, nausea and/or vomiting, sore throat, nasal burning/stinging, headache, unpleasant taste.
Hepatic Dose :
No dosage adjustment is recommended.
