Prothionamide

Mechanism :

bacteriostatic or bactericidal in action, depending on the concentration of the drug attained at the site of infection and the susceptibility of the infecting organism.


Indication :

  • Leprosy
  • Tuberculosis

Contraindications :

Prothionamide is contraindicated in conditions like Hepatic disease, General dose, Chronic resistant vaginal candidiasis.


Dosing :

15 to 20 mg/kg/day oral in 2 or 3 divided doses given after meals or 15 mg/kg/24 hours as a single daily dose. Max dose: 1000 mg/day.

Adverse Effect :

Hepatitis, GI dysfunction, convulsions, sleepiness, headache, insomnia, depression, Paresthesias.


Interaction :

Isoniazid, Rifampicin: Prothionamide is known to interact with other drugs like Isoniazid, Rifampicin.



Hepatic Dose :

Contraindicated in severe liver disease.
